Guarin renews Inter deal

The Colombian looked destined to join Juventus a couple of months ago but has now pledged his future to the Nerazzurri

Inter have renewed the contract of attacking midfielder Fredy Guarin until 2017, completing a total turnaround from January when he was nearly sold to Juventus.

The Colombian looked certain to leave San Siro in the winter transfer window and had all-but-agreed to be part of a swap deal with Bianconeri forward Mirko Vucinic.

However, Nerazzurri president Erick Thohir pulled the plug after fan outcry and his long-term commitment to Inter has now been sealed with a one-year contract extension which could see him stay in Milan for at least another three years.

“I am very happy that I have reached another dream,” he told Inter’s website on Monday. “I will share this with my family, my team-mates and with the people I am closest to.

“Two years have passed since I arrived and it has always been a positive experience, and with every day that has gone by I have learnt a little more. Today I can say that for the next three years I will use those experiences and the positive things I have picked up and make the most of them.

“This is a good moment to say thank you to the president, the coach, the staff, but above all my team-mates and the fans because the faith they have placed in me has been so important.

“Let’s hope I can score to celebrate my new contract, both to help the club to win and to celebrate this special moment.”

Guarin, 25, has made 29 appearances for Inter this season, scoring three goals and bagging 12 assists in the process.

Serie A Team of the Week: Immobile & Tevez strike it rich

A fascinating round of Italian top-flight action throws up some surprise heroes in the best XI

There were a swathe of key results all across the Serie A table in the weekend’s Round 29 action, with Juventus edging closer to the Scudetto, Roma extending their advantage in the Champions League race, Inter falling away in the fight for Europe and big goals being scored down at the bottom. It all makes for a fascinating Goal Team of the Week.

The No.1 shirt goes to Neto, whose heroics helped Fiorentina record a massive win at Napoli, while Giorgio Chiellini was masterful at the back as Juve beat Catania to move three points closer to another Scudetto. Angelo Palombo scored one and dictated the play from his spot just in front of the back line as Sampdoria hammered Verona, and Cesare Bovo was superb in Torino’s 3-1 win against Livorno.

Joaquin was the matchwinner in the weekend’s biggest game, with Fiorentina beating Napoli thanks to the Spaniard’s late goal, and Alvaro Gonzalez grabbed the vital equaliser in Lazio’s 1-1 draw with Milan. Lazaros Christodoulopoulos struck the winning penalty as Bologna recorded a key win over Cagliari. They are joined in midfield by Samp’s two-goal hero Roberto Soriano and Giacomo Bonaventura, whose brace for Atalanta toppled Inter.

Carlos Tevez scored another invaluable goal as Juve remained 14 points clear at the top, but it was Ciro Immobile who shone more than anyone else over the weekend, with his hat-trick in Saturday’s anticipo ensuring Torino took three points from their clash with Livorno.

Hernanes: Inter ready to end season on a high

The former Lazio midfielder has voiced his disappointment with the loss versus Atalanta, but is confident they will enjoy a fine end to the season

Inter midfielder Hernanes is optimistic about the Nerazzurri‘s chances of finishing the 2013-14 campaign on a high, irrespective of their disappointing result against Atalanta at the weekend.

The Giuseppe Meazza side were somewhat surprisingly beaten 2-1 by the Bergamo outfit, yet Hernanes remains confident they can bounce back in the games to come and qualify for European football.

Physically we’re in good shape and ready for a fantastic end of the season,” Hernanes told Inter Channel.

“Against Atalanta it went badly, but we’ll hold our heads up because nothing has changed.

In football there are days like these, when you walk off the pitch disappointed after having created so much and having played so well.

“Our thoughts are already on Thursday against Udinese. I’m pleased we have another game so soon and we want to do our best.”

Inter currently sit fifth in the Serie A table with 47 points from 29 games.
