The coach was delighted with his side’s performance as they demolished Sassuolo 7-0 and insists it is the kind of football he wants them to play all of the time
Walter Mazzarri says the kind of football Inter played in their 7-0 annihilation of Sassuolo is exactly the style he wants to see from them.
The Nerazzurri strolled to victory on Sunday, with Mauro Icardi scoring a hat-trick while Pablo Osvaldo scored two and Mateo Kovacic and Fredy Guarin both found the net.
Mazzarri was elated with his side’s performance as he spoke after the match, describing the display as “ideal football”.
“We ended last season with this style of football, but a few players have changed,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “I said during the week that the wide midfielders had to push forward quickly and be aggressive, as that is the football I like to play.
“Playing in this way and with this tempo is ideal football in my view. We hope to continue like this.
“We want to keep this attitude, determination and aggression on the field. We must be fast, move the ball around quickly and not give our opponents time to think.”
Mateo Kovacic had another good display and played a crucial role in the opening goal and Mazzarri is happy with the way the Croatian is developing.
He continued: “For a while now he has understood how to play in Italy, so he defends and attacks when needed, covering runs, going to get the ball and pressuring opponents.
“Medel was also fantastic and to attack with six players we need someone like him to protect the defence – he provides balance.
“If the entire team plays this way and contributes, then we can use this system against the biggest clubs. I’m sorry we keep beating them 7-0, but Sassuolo are a very good side!
“I’m optimistic this year because many of the players have already known me for a year and so they have a better concept of my ideas. The lads are motivated and I am convinced this side has the right spirit.”
