Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri believes that the Old Lady only have two challengers to their Serie A title this season – despite the upcoming threats of Roma and Lazio.
Following a 2-0 win over Milan at the San Siro, Allegri said: “Napoli are in extraordinary form right now, we have to make sure we’re up there battling with them and Inter in April,” dismissing the threat of Roma and Lazio who are just four points off the pace.
As quoted by Football Italia, Allegri said: “It was a good performance both attacking and defending, we won a head-to-head clash and now prepare for Tuesday, aiming to secure qualification in the Champions League against Sporting.
“We struggled in the first 10 minutes, as we kept passing it short and not seeking the forwards, as Milan were pressing us. Mario Mandzukic and Kwadwo Asamoah did well to track back and block Suso. He is a crucial player who is decisive for Milan with assists and goals, so we did well to neutralise him.”
Allegri had clearly identified Suso, who has scored five goals for Milan so far this season, as a threat. As a left-footer on the right wing, Suso consistently looks to cut inside from the right flank, a preference which the Italian boss neutralised – making this move ineffective for the Spaniard.
Milan couldn’t neutralise the threat of Higuain, however, as the Argentine scored a brace and proved to be the difference on Saturday night. “This must not be an ending point for Higuain,” said Allegri, “He is in great shape at the moment and needs to improve it more than maintain it, but as always that’s an issue of mentality.
“Gonzalo [Higuain] must believe in himself much more, because he has extraordinary potential. Every now and then he rests on his laurels, which is not good for him or for us. He must demand more from himself.”
Beating Milan took Juve top of the table for now, with Inter and Napoli set to play on Sunday – threatening the Bianconeri’s seventh successive Scudetto. With Milan’s title challenge pretty much out of the question, the Serie A title remains open with so many great teams looking to knock Juve off their perch.
