Zanetti: Champions League still main Inter aim

The San Siro legend believes European qualification is the main aim for the Nerazzurri and praised the club’s new signings

Javier Zanetti says Champions League qualification remains the main aim for Inter, despite the club sitting top of Serie A after four games.

The Nerazzurri are looking to improve on last season’s eighth-placed finish and Roberto Mancini’s men have started the campaign with a perfect record.

And the Inter vice-president believes that the club are willing to settle for a spot in Europe’s most prestigious club competition, insisting winning the league would just be a bonus.

“Returning to Europe is still the thing which most interests us,” Zanetti told Sky Sport Italia.

“But if something more comes then we’ll be happy. We’ve started well, but the season is long and very difficult. We have the opportunity to get to the end and still be title contenders.”

The former Argentina international, who won a Champions League trophy with the club, indicated that the current team is some way from the squad that won Europe’s premier competition under Jose Mourinho in 2010.

But the 42-year-old seemed happy with the recruitment in the transfer window and praised new signigns Miranda and Jeison Murillo.

“The table looks good, but there will be difficult times and we have to show we’re ready. This team is very different from the one Mourinho had, there are a lot of new players and those who understand what it means to wear this shirt,” he said.

“I really like Miranda, but also Murillo, Gary Medel in defence and Felipe Melo will do well for us.”
