Vidic 'adapting' to Serie A referees

After spending the last eight years in English football, the Serbian centre-back admits he is still getting used to the style of officiating in Italian football

Nemanja Vidic says he is still adapting to Serie A referees following his summer move to Inter.

The centre-back joined the Nerazzurri after leaving Manchester United on a free transfer at the end of last season, bringing to an end an eight-year stay at Old Trafford.

His arrival has coincided with a positive start to the season for Inter’s fine, in which the club have taken four points from a possible six in Serie A as well as beating Dnipro in the Europa League on Thursday.

Vidic says the club’s target is to qualify for the Champions League this term but refused to rule out a push for the league title.

He said: “I still have to adapt. everything I need to know is not the same as the Premier League. I must also adapt to the referees, to the objectives, it is still early. I think match by match, the goal is the Champions League.”

The defender has also had to get used to playing as part of a back three at San Siro and outlined the differences between his new club and what he was accustomed to at United.

“Tactically we played in Manchester with a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1, here it is different.

“I’m comfortable (in a three-man defence). I hope to show it against Palermo.”
