The Inter president admits he has been impressed with the Dutchman’s work at Ajax before giving his backing to current Nerazzurri coach Walter Mazzarri
Inter president Erick Thohir has revealed his admiration for Ajax boss Frank de Boer, but insists he has complete confidence in Walter Mazzari.
The Dutchman has won three Eredivisie titles at the Amsterdam Arena in as many years since his appointment in 2010, though Thohir says his relationship with Mazzarri is a healthy one.
“I greatly admire the work of De Boer at Ajax but I have great confidence in the work that is taking place at this time Walter Mazzarri,” said Thohir, speaking to Rai Sport Mediaset.
“We talk a lot and we meet, it’s a good thing. If there are long term projects with him? Let’s take a step at a time, as a player I really like Messi, but it isn’t one that makes a champion team. Within a group there must be great cohesion.
“I’m convinced we have a good team, there are also some good strikers and Mazzarri must decide who plays and who does not. It makes me glad there is competition. “
With only one point separating Inter and Verona in sixth place, competition for a European spot is Thohir’s main concern heading into the final months of the season.
He said: “There are still many games to play, our goal must be to get to the fourth or fifth place, you need to get to get a European qualification place.
The Indonesian also added that he was glad Fredy Guarin remained at the club following the arrival of Hernanes from Lazio, after pulling out of a January swap deal involving Juventus striker Mirko Vucinic.
“We assessed that from an economic point of view it was not a profitable operation for us.
“Now with Guarin and Hernanes we have a midfield among the strongest in the Italian championship.”
