Thohir: Kondogbia better for Inter than Toure

The president hailed the new signing as the best option to take the club forward, and expects him to become the leader of the side they are building

Inter president Erick Thohir believes the club made the right choice in signing  Geoffrey Kondogbia  instead of Yaya Toure this summer.

The Nerazzuri had been heavily linked with a move for the Manchester City midfielder, with Roberto Mancini publicly declaring his interest in his former protege Toure as the ideal reinforcement for the midfield.

But the club instead completed a reported €40 million deal with Monaco for Kondogbia, with the in-demand France international putting pen-to-paper on a five-year contract with the club .

And Thohir used the opportunity of the player’s presentation on Monday to claim the 22-year-old was superior to Toure as a future flag bearer for the club.

“Kondogbia is much younger than Toure, and can become a much better player with time,” the Indonesian declared to reporters. “Geoffrey will become the cornerstone of a young and strong project.

“I’d like to welcome Kondogbia to the club. It was wonderful to see the fans giving him such an enthusiastic welcome today, showing how much they love Inter.

“We want to create a great side, and now it’s up to the players to bring the results.”

The former Lens and Sevilla midfielder is now the most expensive signing of Thohir’s reign as president, with the objective for the club to improve on last term’s eighth-placed finish in Serie A that saw Mancini’s side fail to qualify for Europe.
