The 21-year-old is confident he can play anywhere in his new side’s midfield and is looking forward to teaming up with Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo
Mateo Kovacic has spoken of his delight at joining Real Madrid, hailing it as the “greatest club in the world” and admits he is expecting great things of himself and the team.
The 21-year-old completed a €35 million move from Inter on Tuesday and was unveiled to the media and Madrid supporters at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.
And in his first words as a Blancos player, he insisted that he can fit in anywhere in Rafael Benitez’s midfield.
“I’m at the greatest club in the world and this is so special,” he told reporters. “I expect a lot from myself and the club.
“I’m not the one who will decide which position I play, but I’m comfortable in the defensive midfield role. It’s the coach’s decision.
“I talked with Benitez when I met him when he was at Napoli and I’m so happy to work with a great coach like him.”
Kovacic was also full of praise for his team-mates, insisting Cristiano Ronaldo is the club’s best player and stating that he cannot wait to team up with fellow Croatian Luka Modric.
“Luka is a great friend. He is a great player and i’m so happy to share locker room with him. [Ronaldo] is the greatest player in the world for me, but each player has his own characteristics.
“All the players here are incredible, but for sure Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest and the top scorer for Real Madrid. It is an honour to be in this team with these players.”
The midfielder admitted that the move came very quickly for him and stressed he was happy at Inter, despite the team’s struggles over the last two seasons.
“There was an offer and the clubs reached an agreement, I didn’t have much to decide. I’m so happy with this transfer.
“I’m not disapponted about my Inter experience. There are hard moments in football and life. Inter is a great club and i’m sure that they will be great again soon.”
