The best in the business are recognised in Goal’s top XI from the weekend’s Italian action
There remains plenty in the balance as the Serie A season approaches its final three weeks, with a number of star men putting in a big shift over the weekend as they battled to help their sides reach their respective goals.
Mattia Perin was one such hero for Genoa, saving German Denis’ penalty in the 1-1 draw with Atalanta, while Luca Antonelli was excellent down the flanks for the Grifone. Juan Cuadrado was fantastic once again as he grabbed two goals in Fiorentina’s 3-0 victory at Bologna. Inter held Napoli to a 0-0 stalemate thanks in part to the display of Andrea Ranocchia at the back, and Leandro Castan was also in top form as Roma beat Milan 2-0.
Miralem Pjanic scored a sensational opening goal in the Giallorossi‘s win at the Stadio Olimpico, and Gokhan Inler was a key element in Napoli’s midfield in their San Siro draw, almost winning it late on as his low shot hit the inside of the post. Meanwhile, Stefano Mauri was Lazio’s leader as they left Livorno staring at the abyss down at the bottom of the league.
Up front, there are three regular faces in the shape of Serie A’s three highest scorers of 2013-14. Ciro Immobile netted his 21st goal of the season as Torino saw off Udinese, while Luca Toni‘s strike in Verona’s 4-0 win over Catania took him to 19 in the league this term. Finally, Juventus’ hero on Monday night was Carlos Tevez, who netted his 19th goal of the season in what was a complete display from the Argentine at Sassuolo.
