Mazzarri: Inter should have closed out the match

Moustapha Bayal Sall pounced on a loose ball in the box to cancel out Dodo’s opening goal and the coach feels his side should have avoided the slip-up

Walter Mazzarri was happy with Inter’s performance in Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Saint-Etienne in the Europa League, but insists they should have seen it through.

Dodo gave the Italian side a first-half lead, but a Moustapha Bayal Sall goal after Nemanja Vidic failed to clear a corner in the second period ensured the French club took a point from the clash.

The Inter boss has come under increasing pressure of late as his side have now won just two of their last seven games in all competitions.

And the 53-year-old feels his players should have closed the game out after taking the lead.

“I am proud of the game we played,” he said. “We played great football in the first half. We should have and could have closed the game out, but then because of the great disaster we suffered a bit in the second half, but we played as a team, we knew how to suffer and we brought home this important point that puts us on the brink of qualification.

“Too bad for their draw, if we could be a little more careful we would be through, but the boys have done very well and I am happy with the response that they showed today.”
