Marcos Alonso’s Dad Hints Defender Could Return to Serie A Amid Inter Interest

Marcos Alonso Peña, the father of Marcos Alonso, has suggested that the defender’s future lies in Italy once his career in England comes to an end.

Alonso hasn’t enjoyed a consistent run of games in the first team under Frank Lampard, and amid rumoured interest from Inter – where he would be reunited with Antonio Conte – the Spaniard’s time in west London appears to be waning.

The 29-year-old enjoyed three years in Serie A with Fiorentina, which revitalised his career after not establishing himself at Real Madrid and enduring relegation at Bolton Wanderers.

In an interview with ?Calciomercato, Peña spoke succinctly and candidly of his son’s time in Italy.

“Awesome. He always talks about his legendary three years in Florence, says that Serie A is a beautiful championship and continues to be very close to Italy because he has many friends there. He has a very good memory.”

Alonso has enjoyed the best football of his career at Stamford Bridge, playing a vital role in Conte’s title-winning side of 2016/17.

Alonso’s wing-back play of that season helped a tactical revolution within the ?Premier League as sides across the league followed suit and copied Conte’s 3-5-2 formation.

Alonso looked set to leave this January transfer window but ended up staying as Lampard remained unconvinced by Emerson Palmieri.

Peña spoke on the logistics of a possible transfer, continuing: “I don’t know, it’s difficult to say,’ he replied. He still has a three-year contract with ?Chelsea, it doesn’t depend on him, but on the will of the English club. I can only say that my son loves Italy.”

This is currently a good time for Alonso’s representation to talk up a summer move as the wing-back played a crucial role in Chelsea 2-1 win over ?Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

It remains to be seen how much it will take for Chelsea to sell, but given Conte’s previous relationship with the player and Alonso’s interest to return to Italy, it’s a deal that could please both parties.
