Inter win would make for a merry Milan Christmas – Bonera

The Rossoneri defender hopes that overcoming the cross-city rivals on Sunday will make for a more relaxed festive period and set up a prosperous 2014

Daniele Bonera says AC Milan are desperate to overcome Inter in Sunday’s Derby della Madonnina to allow them to enjoy a merry Christmas.

The Nerazzurri go into the Serie A encounter nine points clear of their local rivals, who are languishing in 12th place as of Sunday morning, and will be looking to add further pressure on Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri.

However, Bonera, who has played only five times for the Rossoneri this season after recovering from a fractured kneecap, believes that a derby victory will be just the tonic to lift his team’s spirits ahead of the winter break.

“The derby is always a special game and it being this close to Christmas makes it even more special,” the 32-year-old told a press conference.

“It could mean a merry Christmas for us, giving us a few more points on the table and helping enter 2014 with a calmer state of mind.

“It’ll be a tough game on Sunday from a technical point of view as Inter remain a strong team even if they haven’t had such great results in the past few matches.

“We’re doing everything we can to prepare the match in the best manner possible even if we dropped a few points on the way to the game. We’ve let in too many goals and there’s some disappointment from the games where we should have got more than we did.”

Milan have looked poor in the league this season and reports in Italy suggest Clarence Seedorf is set to replace Allegri at the helm, while Inter sit fifth having failed to win in four Serie A clashes.
