Chivu injury

Cristian Chivu risked death after “a very rare and serious complication,” but is now ready to star in the Scudetto showdown for Inter.

The defender fractured his skull during the 1-0 win over Chievo on January 6 when he accidentally collided with Sergio Pellissier.

He had emergency surgery and still sports a large scar on his head, but made his comeback on Wednesday and will play against Roma with the aid of a protective helmet.

“The trauma caused a bruise around the brain that is a very rare and serious complication, because it can deteriorate suddenly,” explained Professor Broggi, who performed the surgery.

“A typical case is when a person arrives at the ER after a car accident and says he’s fine, then suddenly collapses to the ground without any apparent reason.

“If there are no neurosurgeons nearby at that moment, then there is real trouble.”

Chivu started in Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Livorno and is expected to play against Roma at 17.00 this evening.

“The lad has now recovered and from next season will not need the helmet any more. At this time he’s mainly wearing it for a sense of psychological security.

“His recovery was primarily down to him. We are dealing with a very motivated, aware and professional person.

“He can connect his head with both the ball and the heads of opposition players. His case is different to that of Petr Cech, as there are no metal plates involved.”

AS Roma v Internazionale FC (Serie A)

This result will prove crucial in the Scudetto race, as first welcome second with Milan waiting in the wings.

These two clubs did battle regularly in the wake of the Calciopoli scandal, culminating in a large chunk of the afternoon with Roma as title winners on the final round in 2007-08. Inter ended up on top that day and have won every title since 2006, but this time the gap at the top is very small with a long way to go.

A victory for the Giallorossi will put them just one point behind Inter and potentially allow Milan back into the running following their slip-up at Parma midweek. Many would argue that Roma are now the primary contenders, having more consistency than the Rossoneri and the wind in their sails.

“We are unbeaten in 20 rounds, so whatever happens we can say this has been a positive campaign,” insisted Claudio Ranieri. “We’re ready to throw Inter a party. Before kick-off I will tell the lads to have fun and give it their all, because they have worked hard to earn this opportunity. What do we have to lose? We don’t have the Scudetto shield on our jerseys like Inter’s players. Why should we feel pressure on our shoulders?”

The pressure did seem to be getting to Inter in recent weeks, as Mario Balotelli has been frozen out following an alleged row with the Coach. He is again expected to be left in the stands in favour of Samuel Eto’o, Goran Pandev and the returning Wesley Sneijder. Dejan Stankovic is also available again after his ban for the midfield.

It’s uncertain whether Jose Mourinho will risk Cristian Chivu, who was rushed back from a fractured skull to make his return in the 3-0 win over Livorno on Wednesday. The former Roma defender is playing with the aid of a Petr Cech-style helmet while he continues to recover from that very serious injury.

Inter swept away the critics midweek by hammering Livorno 3-0, but those who saw that game can tell you the visitors went very close to gaining a deserved lead in the first half. It suggests the Nerazzurri’s difficulties stem further than merely breaking through the run of one win from six games, but the statistics show they have gone four points clear at the top of the table. Only a week ago Milan had the opportunity to leapfrog Inter, but here the title holders are right back in a commanding position.

Roma also went through a rough patch in recent weeks, drawing three on the bounce against Napoli, Milan and Livorno. They seem to be on track again with back-to-back victories over Udinese and Bologna allowing them to catch Milan in second place. Francesco Totti has warned he is still not far along in the recovery process, so is unlikely to feature in this match.

Luca Toni has filled in admirably and has support from Mirko Vucinic and a reborn Jeremy Menez. The Frenchman has been a revelation of recent weeks after a dismal career so far at the Olimpico. He finally appears to have settled into Serie A, though he faces competition from old guard Simone Perrotta and Rodrigo Taddei over a starting shirt. Juan returns from suspension to bolster the defence, but it is Philippe Mexes who could be benched in favour of Nicolas Andre Burdisso.

Last season Inter came away with a 4-0 victory from the Olimpico, but spectacular results are de rigeur between these sides. Roma haven’t beaten the Nerazzurri here in Serie A since a 3-2 result on March 4 2001, the year of the Scudetto.

Also expect plenty of incident, as the last four meetings here in all competition ended with a grand total of 20 goals. Last season a 4-0 triumph in Week 7 effectively ruled the Giallorossi out before the Scudetto race got going, but things have most certainly changed.

Keep an eye on: Luca Toni (Roma) – The hitman has proved crucial in Roma’s charge, not just for his goals, but also assists and generally holding up the ball. That can be precious against the rugged Inter defence that neutralised Chelsea.

Raiola: Balotelli isn’t suprised at all

Mario Balotelli is calm and apparently expected not to be included in Jose Mourinho’s latest Inter squad, according to his agent.

The precocious 19-year-old has now been dropped five times after a spat with Mourinho following Inter’s stalemate with Genoa on March 7.

There have been reports that Balotelli might leave in the summer, although Inter are reluctant to give up on a top prospect from their academy.

Speculation only increased earlier this week when Balotelli accepted and then tried on a Milan shirt with his name and number on the back.

Speaking to Italian news agency ANSA, Balotelli’s agent Mino Raiola was asked how his client responded to being excluded again.

“It wasn’t a real surprise,” he said. “I would have been surprised if the opposite had happened.

“Evidently if Mourinho continues not to select Mario, the club shares his decision.”

When asked to reveal how long Balotelli can put up with the situation, Raiola replied: “Sure, he doesn’t like still being out of the squad, but Mario has a clean conscience and he feels calm. Actually, he feels super calm.

“Every one of us is beside him and we have never been so calm,” he concluded.

World Cup review

Word Cup is almost here, we feel it in the air. And we will review it because of our players who will play there.

Let’s start:

Julio Cesar; Lucio (cap) and Douglas Maicon – Brazil: They are first team players, without Brazil national team wouldn’t be like now, and we can expect a lot from them in Brazil Word Cup 2010 competition, specially because they’re gonna play on homeground.

Santon is in Italy national team, while Mario Balotelli not yet. Dejan Stankovic will play for Serbia in first team as captain, while Sneijder for Holland. We also expect to see Milito in Argentina national team, besides the regular ones. For Cameroon there is Samuel Eto’o.

We will for sure let you know what has changed, news and reports from there when the time comes for that. Until then, we can only hope other players will also be called up, like Mario Balotelli even if in this time, he has no future in Inter Milan.

Mariga full ownership plan

The 22-year-old Kenya international midfielder joined Inter in January when Parma agreed to sell 50 per cent of his rights for €3m.

Inter are reportedly impressed with his progress and their chief technical director Marco Branca wants to finalise a deal with the Gialloblu.

La Gazzetta understands that Inter are prepared to send Obi and Nwankwo – two of their most promising academy players – to the Ennio Tardini this summer as part of the arrangement.

Meanwhile Branca was in Brazil yesterday where he met Philippe Coutinho, the 17-year-old Vasco da Gama playmaker who will also join Inter in June.

Inter agreed to sign the Brazil Under-17 international in 2008, but Brazilian law stipulates that he could only move when he is no longer a minor.
